Our featured artisan Huw Gareth Jones is a fine art based in the South Western edge of Ynys Cybi, Holy Island and Ynys Mon, Anglesey. Rhoscolyn has been Huw's home and studio for the last twenty years and this windswept and wild area has become the focus of his work, although he still likes to paint other parts of the island and the mainland, especially the mountains of Eryri, Snowdonia.

Huw’s work is based on drawings and paintings done on location. Quick sketches in pencil or a more substantial drawing or painting to convey an impression of the scene, the light, tone, colour, texture and the atmosphere.

His pieces finely balance how one colour varies and blends into another, and how moving one or more elements can enhance the composition and clarity in the meaning of the work. Huw’s signature style always successfully retains some of the initial freshness and dynamism from location, depicting the mood and the excitement in varying light and weather.

He conveys feeling through paint, let’s colours work together and encourages the eye to travels around the composition, finding interest in line, shape, marks and patterns. There are sometimes abstract elements where the negative space is emphasized and colours have developed from the process.
